What Does It Involve?
The Role
The main role of a Parish Councillor is to represent the views of all residents within the Parish and to listen to, and understand, the needs of different groups in the community.
Parish Councils are statutory bodies, have limited power to make decisions but they do have the power to influence those organisations such as district or county councils that do make the final decisions.
Volunteers
Parish Councillors are volunteers who receive no payment for the work they do.
All members of the Council are legally required to complete a declaration of interests form which are published on the website.
Support and Training
Councillors receive training and support provided by bodies such as the National Association of Local Councils and the Local Government Association.
Code of Conduct
Parish Councillors must abide by the Code of Conduct which focuses on the Nolan Principles for public life.
